Theatre in Schools Scotland (TiSS) is an innovative schools touring project produced by Imaginate (who produce Edinburgh International Children's Festival) and National Theatre of Scotland. TiSS presents an annual programme of live theatre and dance performances for different age groups. The performances are available to book for schools anywhere in Scotland.
TiSS productions are carefully selected for schools’ audiences, and we continually programme new touring shows made by performing companies and artists in Scotland. We work with teachers, learning communities, education colleagues, local authorities, arts organisations and venues to develop new ways of creating closer collaborations between the provision of theatre and dance performances for schools and an education which includes a valued enjoyment of the arts, integrated across learning.
TiSS reaches every local authority in Scotland. The programme aims to raise the quality of theatre and dance performances shown to children in schools and it is specially designed to support teachers and suit school settings.
TiSS was initially conceived in 2016 by Imaginate and the National Theatre of Scotland as a three-year pilot project to support and develop the touring of high-quality theatre and dance performances to Scotland’s schools and nurseries. The pilot project was developed in partnership with Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, Visible Fictions and Starcatchers.

As national organisations, National Theatre of Scotland and Imaginate take seriously a commitment to provide theatre to all the people of Scotland, breaking down the geographic and economic barriers that prevent engagement with the arts.
Theatre in Schools Scotland enhances the reach of quality performances already made for children in Scotland, allowing young people across the country to see shows in their local communities that have toured the world. It allows children access to new stories, new voices and new experiences. It makes theatre relevant, exciting and accessible and enriches the lives of children across Scotland.

Imaginate is the national organisation in Scotland, which develops, celebrates and presents theatre and dance for children and young people. Its purpose is to improve and enrich the lives of children and young people. Imaginate wants more children to experience work that is deeply engaging, innovative and inspiring as this will help develop children’s confidence and self-expression, broadening their horizons and raising their aspirations.
The organisation produces the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival, an annual celebration of exceptional Scottish and international theatre and dance for young audiences, with a focus on visually striking performances with high production value. The Festival is attended by 18,000 children, their teachersa nd families, as well as artists and professionals from all over the world. Imaginate also runs a year-round schools programme to inspire children and teachers through live performance and projects, as well as a diverse programme to support the creative development of artists and freelancers involved in the young audience sector. National Theatre of Scotland is dedicated to playing the great stages, arts centres, village halls, schools and site-specific locations of Scotland, the UK and internationally. As well as creating ground-breaking productions and working with the most talented theatre-makers, the National Theatre of Scotland produces significant community engagement projects, innovates digitally and works constantly to develop new talent. Central to this is finding pioneering ways to reach current and new audiences and to encourage people’s full participation in the Company’s work. With no performance building of its own, the Company works with existing and new venues and companies to create and tour theatre of the highest quality. Founded in 2006, the Company, in its short life, has become a globally significant theatrical player, with an extensive repertoire of award-winning work. The National Theatre of Scotland is supported by the Scottish Government.
