Mixed Up includes a series of short films for pupils and teachers with interactive elements to watch together in the classroom. Then it’s time to get creative in a teacher-facilitated large-scale drawing session in the playground supported by a range of materials.

Family Portrait

Video installation in hall and outdoor workshop.

Presented by Barrowland Ballet

Family Portrait is an award-winning interactive video installation, combining striking imagery and choreography.  Surrounded by four screens you and your class will be able to see Barrowland Ballet’s Artistic Director Natasha Gilmore and her three children in an intimate portrayal of family life.

With space to roam, her children encounter rabbit skulls, converse with spiders, make war paint with berries and discover the fun of burying their mother in bark. With humour and candour, the work shares an honest depiction of what family really is - responsibility, joy, balance, intimacy and, most of all, love. Filmed in the splendour of Scotland’s natural environment, Family Portrait is a celebration of getting out into nature, and invites you into a journey of family relationships with all its relentless and glorious chaos!

There is a playfulness in the way the piece is edited across the four screens and, seated in between the screens, pupils have the chance to do their own edit as they watch, to follow what they find interesting and what captures their attention.

A post-show workshop explores elements of nature and gives time and space for the class to explore and re-enact moments from the work.

ABOUT THEATRE IN SCHOOLS SCOTLAND

We present a variety of performances for different age groups in a wide range of schools across the country. We work with teachers, learning communities, education colleagues, local authority arts organisations and performing companies to develop ways of creating closer collaboration between the provision of theatre and dance performances for schools and an education which includes a valued enjoyment of the arts, integrated across learning.

In the first three years, fourteen productions toured over six hundred performances to schools and nurseries in every local authority across Scotland. These performances have been supported by a variety of partners, from touring networks to theatres to local authority education departments. Consultation with these schools and partners has informed the development of new teaching resources and programming considerations.

Theatre in Schools Scotland continues to be supported by regional partners, schools and local authorities.

Theatre in Schools Scotland was initially developed as a three year pilot project by Imaginate and National Theatre of Scotland in partnership with Catherine Wheels Theatre Company, Starcatchers and Visible Fictions.

The three year pilot report is now available to read here

Teachers and children will enjoy the performance without prior knowledge of the story but, when available, information packs help teachers prepare and link to classroom plans.

Introduction for Pupils

The day before your class watch the performance please show them the An introduction for Pupils. This video will give them a friendly introduction to having a theatre performance in their school. In the video, we have asked some questions to start to get pupils thinking about the performances. These questions can also be used as discussion points after they have all seen the performance.
