OPPORTUNITIES
CURRENT OPPORTUNITIES
Members of the TISS team are always keen to attend sharings or performances of work for children, or by artists or companies who are interested in making work for children in future. We can also offer advice to artists and companies looking to re-develop existing work for schools touring. Please let us know of any opportunities to see your work, or request a meeting via [email protected]
Theatre in Schools Scotland opens an annual callout for touring productions. The next callout is planned for spring 2025 for productions for the school year 2026-27.
We will accept interest from possible Associated Productions on a rolling basis, outwith the callout process.
Associated Productions:
Each year we aim to programme two Associated productions, usually for which the company or artist are already fully funded to tour and would like the support of TISS to add schools dates to their tour.
TISS supports marketing, administration, and booking for these schools performances within the production’s broader tour schedule. Alongside the artist or company, the TISS team work out on what dates and in what areas the production is available, and TISS then books schools in. TISS collects payment from each school which is then paid out as the daily fee to the company or artist, which is the extent of TISS financial support.
The usual cost to schools per day/daily fee paid to the company by TISS is:
All fees and costs for performers and creative team during rehearsal and performance period, as well as van/car hire, petrol, per diems, royalties, and accommodation are the responsibility of the company or artist. TISS tour length/number of days will depend on your other touring circumstances, but ideally within TISS you would offer a minimum of 10 days.
You may be keen to tour to schools during September 2024 - March 2025 or September 2025 - March 2026 but would benefit from TISS knowledge, contacts, or administrative time to arrange schools dates. You may have a funded family/community venue tour planned during the academic year and wish to add some schools dates to the tour, or you may have a ‘super-light’ or pop-up performance that doesn’t have a planned tour but could tour to schools with the support of the daily TISS fee (£350-£500). The production should be suitable for or easily adjusted to suit school halls, and have already been successfully performed for children of the intended age – ideally to a school or other large group of children (rather than only to a family audience).
Please get in touch with questions about your specific needs or future tour planning if you are not sure whether Associated production would work for your production, email Julian Almeida at [email protected]

2. Remount Productions:
Touring within the school year September 2025 - March 2026.
What is a TISS Remount production?
Each year we aim to remount two productions; the remount of these productions is funded by TISS.
The company or artist will agree a budget with TISS. This usually includes a period of rehearsal (up to two weeks) including fees for performers and artistic team. The budget agreed with TISS covers all touring team fees, royalties, and per diems, but does not include redevelopment time.
The average budget that we are able to support for Remounts is:
If applying as a Remount production, the application form will prompt you to upload a complete budget (template linked at the end of this document).
TISS plans, markets, and arranges the tour, and organises the details of each school visit in partnership with the company or artist. Schools book through TISS and TISS collects payment from each school to support the project budget.
The production will tour across Scotland, usually for a period of 6-8 weeks. This can be a split tour across two academic terms or one long tour period. Productions will usually be performed twice a day to audiences up to 120 pupils at a time in a school hall, dependent on the specific production.
Who is a Remount production right for?
You will have a production which you would like to tour to schools across Scotland in the academic year 25-26, with TISS funding to support the rehearsal and tour period. You would also benefit from planning, marketing, and booking assistance from TISS.
The production should be suitable for school halls and have already been successfully performed for children of the intended age – ideally to a school or other large group of children (rather than only to a family audience).

Theatre in Schools Scotland (TISS) is looking for:
- Associated productions to tour in the school year September 2024 – March 2025
- Remount and Associated productions to tour in the school year September 2025 – March 2026
There are two ways for artists or companies to be part of the TISS programme: as an Associated production or as a Remount production.
- An Associated Production is normally already touring and looking to extend their touring dates, and will therefore receive a flat daily fee for each school booking.
- A Remount Production will receive a budget from TISS to fund the re-rehearsal and touring period.
The Theatre in Schools Scotland model:
- TISS has a commitment to tour to any school, anywhere in Scotland. TISS visits large, small, urban, and rural schools, and touring often includes long drives, ferry journeys, and early mornings.
- TISS tours usually visit a different school each day, 5 schools in a week. A usual daily schedule is 2-hour morning get in, 2 performances with a lunch break, a 1-2 hour get out, and a journey to the next day’s location.
- TISS performances usually take place in the school’s gym hall or main hall, for audiences of up to 120 children at a time.
- Schedule and room/space used can be adjusted to fit productions where needs differ. For example, in productions for pupils with Additional Support Needs (ASN) the audience capacity or room used can be smaller.
All productions must be:
- Suitable for performance in school halls or classrooms.
- This generally means a production with less than two-hour load in, that can run off a school’s power supply and from 2 power outlets, be performed on a flat level without a stage or raked seating, and without black-out.
- If you have any questions about whether a production would be suitable, please get in touch with us for a conversation, contact details are at the end of this call-out document.
- A list of previous TISS productions can be seen on this website, under ‘Previous Shows’ in the top menu.
- Suitable for pupils within our audience of Nursery-Secondary 2 (S2) – which means suitable for ages within 4-14 years.
- For example, this could be a production suitable for Nursery-Primary 4 (P4), or a production suitable for Primary 4-Primary 7, etc.
- Any productions suitable for S1 and/or S2 must also be suitable for P6 and P7 – which means suitable for the whole range of ages 10-14 years.
- Must be able to tour to Primary schools, Secondary schools, and mixed groups of Primary and Secondary
- Any productions suitable for Nursery must also be suitable for P1 and P2 – which means suitable for ages 4-7 years.
